Because it’s stupid.
Anyway, I chuckled over these famous “convoes” I snagged from somebody else’s blog. (Um, A. Harner’s I think.) Enjoy.

A Samford grad (such as myself) would never use “convo” to mean “conversation” because any Samford alum will tell you that “convo” is short for “convocation,” which was held every Monday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Reid Chapel. We had to attend a total of sixty-four convos before we could graduate (an average of eight per semester). We would register our attendance by putting our names and student numbers on “convo cards.” “Are you going to convo?” was a question frequently heard at the end of 9:00 MWF classes.
Besides, “convo” can’t be short for “conversation” because the word is not “convosation.” Like you said: stupid.
